Hemispherical map of the Moon showing surface features such as placenames, craters and mountain ranges. Relief shown by shading and pictorially.
Engraved text on the right describes the history of Jean-Dominique Cassini’s (1625-1712) lunar map. In the lower half, on the mountain range Promontorium Heraclides (bottom right of the map) is a woman’s head in profile with long flowing hair. There is also a marking shaped like the Greek letter phi (φ) which appears in the Sea of Serenity, roughly shaped like a heart.
